IAM Is a Program, Not a Project: Lessons from Appalachian State University

Appalachian State ran campus identity on twenty-year-old Banner scripts, manual provisioning, two separate onboarding paths, and a handful of disconnected directories. Rapid enrollment growth, mounting technical debt, and retiring institutional knowledge made that untenable.

In this candid fireside conversation, the App State team shares what it actually took to modernize: the business case that unlocked funding, the structural and staffing changes that followed, and a phased rollout that now manages the full lifecycle for more than 45,000 accounts across Active Directory, Google, and LDAP. They will be honest about what surprised them, including a leadership change in the middle of the work, and why treating identity as an ongoing program rather than a one-time project is what made it stick.

Meet Us at UNC CAUSE

Bring the identity problem you have not solved yet.

  • Automate joiner, mover and leaver changes for students, faculty, staff, alumni and affiliates
  • Keep access right for people who hold more than one role, such as student employees
  • Connect identity to your systems of record, including the SIS and the HR system
  • Bring privileged and service accounts under the same governance
  • Give users secure self-service password recovery with Bravura Pass

At BOOTH 54

Bring Your Term-Start Numbers.

One question, one useful conversation.

How many accounts did your team create, change or close at the start of this term, and how many of those changes were manual? Stop by our table with a rough estimate. We will walk you through where the manual work sits and what a phased identity plan could look like for your campus.

Ask us how campuses:

  • Give new students and staff the right access on day one, and remove it when they leave
  • Keep access right when a student becomes an employee, or an employee enrolls
  • Govern access consistently across schools, units and research groups
  • Run access reviews and reports that support FERPA and GLBA audit readiness

Short on time? Book a 20-minute slot below and we will hold time for you on the day.

How App State Modernized IAM Across a Complex Campus.

Appalachian State University serves more than 20,000 students and staff. Working with Bravura Security and Moran Technology Consulting, it replaced homegrown scripts and manual provisioning with a phased program: birthright access first, then password management, then access requests, approvals and certification.

What App State achieved

  • Unified IAM across Banner, Google, DUO and LDAP
  • Reduced help desk tickets and manual workflows
  • Improved audit readiness and compliance

Why we are here

Since 1992. Still Closing the Same Gap.

Campuses run identity across systems that were not built to talk to each other. Think of the SIS, the HR system, Microsoft Entra ID and dozens of campus applications. People change roles each term, and the gaps between systems show up as orphaned accounts, access nobody approved and audit findings.

We close that space. One platform for Identity, Privileged Access, and Password management, with connectors into the systems you already own.
